Maybe Tomorrow, A New Romance by Matt Solomon

Melbourne based Matt Solomon started taking photography seriously around 2008 when he began shooting bands around Melbourne for press and album artwork, but made the jump to fashion when he felt he needed more freedom to be creative: “- I got sick of bands requesting shots they had already seen in magazines. Fashion photography gave me the freedom to explore my ideas.

His jump to fashion photography has been a great success, and as big fans of his work, we at Ben Trovato are excited to present to you his first exclusive story for us. Maybe Tomorrow, A New Romance features the stunning up and coming model Stephanie MacHutchison with Cameron’s, her hair and make up was done by Phoebe Goulding, and she was styled by Sarah Carr and Kate Harvey. The wardrobe includes a mixture of vintages pieces with contemporary lables such as Arnsdorf, Maurie&Eve, American Apparel, Zomp, Urban Outfitters and Gorman.

Matt says this about the story: “- I think this story really comes from loneliness, the room acting as a metaphor for being stuck in your own head. The model looking for company to keep her mind off being alone and motels are always considered a place to “get away”. It also comes from missing my girlfriend who has been traveling for the past six months.

Inspiration for most of Matt’s work comes from things other than photography, he explains: “- I get inspired by films mostly. I love Pierre Le Fou by Jean Luc Goddard , the colours in that are amazing. I have just fallen in love with the romance of Charlie Chaplin films. And anything Harmony Korine does I am always instantly drawn to. In terms of photographers I can never go past Guy Bourdin but I also really love the contempary photographers like Jonathan Leder.
